31 p.c. rise in electronics production

NEW DELHI, MAY 4. India's electronics production is estimated to jump about 31 per cent to touch Rs. 68,700 crores during 2000-01 from Rs. 52,450 crores in the previous year, the Information Technology Ministry's annual report has said.

"During 2000-01, the computer software industry has witnessed a growth of 64 per cent and the hardware industry a mere 9.3 per cent. While software is doing well in the country, production in the hardware industry is not able to keep pace with the demand," the report said.

In 2000-01, components production is estimated to witness a marginal 5.7 per cent growth to Rs. 5,500 crores from Rs. 5,200 crores in the previous year.

The consumer electronics production profile would touch Rs. 11,700 crores in 2000-01 from Rs. 11,200 crores in the previous year, while production of industrial electronics is estimated at Rs. 3,950 crores, up from Rs. 3,750 crores clocked in 1999-00.

In another segment, production of computers is estimated at Rs. 3,400 crores in 2000-01, a 36 per cent increase from Rs. 2,500 crores in the previous year.

Communication and broadcasting equipment production would also jump to Rs. 4,400 crores in 2000-01 from Rs. 4,000 crores in 1999-00, the annual report said.

The software industry continued to dominate the production profile with the domestic software production estimated at Rs. 9,500 crores and exports were projected at Rs. 28,500 crores, the report said.

Production of strategic electronics is estimated at Rs. 1,750 crores in 2000-01 against Rs. 1,450 crores achieved in the previous year.

Tracing out the production trends over the last five years, the report said, that the production level had grown from Rs. 26,640 crores in 1996-97, to Rs. 32,070 crores in 1997-98, Rs. 41,140 crores in 1998-99, Rs. 52,450 crores in 1999-00, touching the current level of Rs. 68,700 crores in 2000-01. - PTI
