Mahanta blames EC for violence
GUWAHATI, MAY 4. The Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. Prafulla Kumar
Mahanta, today came down heavily upon the Election Commission
(EC) holding it responsible for the pre-poll violence in the
State.
``The Government had repeatedly demanded holding of election in
three phases but in supreme arrogance and mistrust of the
Government's stand and lack of foresight, the EC decided to hold
election on a single day,'' Mr. Mahanta said in a statement
released by the party secretary, Mr. Kartick Hazarika.
Alleging that the ULFA was creating violence at the instance of
the Congress, Mr. Mahanta, said the EC, by its ``miscalculation
and mis-judgment has made itself vulnerable to the charge that it
is working against the interest of the State and its people for
furthering the interest of the Congress.''
``Under these circumstances, the EC is squarely responsible for
all that is happening in the State,'' he said.
