Candidate withdraws

By Our Special Correspondent

MIDNAPORE, MAY 7. Mr. Rajani Doloi, the Trinamool Congress candidate in Keshpur in Midnapore district, today announced his decision to withdraw from the fray in the face of what he described as coercive measures being resorted to by the ruling Communists in collusion with the police.

Mr. Doloi told newsmen that he had informed the Chief Election Commissioner, Dr. M.S. Gill, and the party chief, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, about his decision.

Mr. Doloi said that he had tried to draw the attention of the CEC to the ``coercive'' measures being adopted by the CPI (M) in Keshpur but in vain.

The Returning Officer, Mr. M.V. Rao, however, said that Mr. Doloi could not withdraw at this point and that he was prepared to provide him and his agents with adequate security.
