Naxals gun down BJP leader

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MAY 11. The Nizamabd district president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Revuri Surendar (35), was shot dead by two unidentified extremists of the People's War Group (PWG) in Kamareddy town of Nizamabad this morning. The BJP has called Nizamabad bandh on Saturday in protest against the killing.

According to information reaching here, Surendar was about to leave for Nizamabad from his residence near the Gunj. He had asked his jeep driver to go inside the house to fetch some papers when the two naxalites walked up to him. They whipped out a pistol and pumped bullets into him from a close range. As Surendar collapsed, the assailants fled. Some hamalis who were working in the Gunj tried to chase the naxalites but they were threatened by the duo. One of the naxals left his chappals while fleeing. Following the murder, tension escalated in Kamareddy town. Police teams had immediately fanned out in nearby areas and commenced combing. Police were using sniffer dogs to track down the killers.

The daylight killing of the BJP leader comes close on the heels of a leader of the People's Guerrilla Army (PGA) Chandranna's statement recently that the PWG would now begin targeting BJP and Telugu Desam leaders. Chandranna talked to reporters last week in the Adilabad forests and disclosed that the PWG would now be targeting ruling party and BJP leaders.
