60 p.c. turnout in repoll
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MAY 12. Repoll in 181 pooling stations in Assam, West
Bengal and Tamil Nadu was held today amid tight security. An
estimated 60 per cent of the electors turned out to exercise
their franchise in today's repoll. Repolling in 121 polling
booths in Barak Valley in Assam will be held tomorrow.
Barring stray incidents of violence and poll boycott in Bishnupur
Assembly segment in West Bengal, the repoll in Assam and Tamil
Nadu was peaceful. Sources in the Election Commission expressed
``satisfaction'' over the conduct of repoll.
In West Bengal, where over 60 per cent voting was recorded in 90
booths spread over 30 Assembly constituencies, police fired eight
rounds in the air to disperse CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress
activists who clashed outside two booths in Bishnupur.
In Assam, more than 60 per cent of the electorate cast their
votes as repolling in 85 polling stations under 19 constituencies
in Brahmaputra valley ended peacefully.
In Tamil Nadu, about 50 per cent of voters exercised their
franchise in the repoll held in six booths in as many Assembly
constituencies.
