State's economic condition dismal: Gogoi
GUWAHATI, MAY 19. Mr. Tarun Gogoi, who took over the reins of
Assam on Friday, today said the congress government under him had
assumed office at a time when ``the state's economic condition
was dismal and bogged down by insurgency''.
``No Chief Minister of the State has taken over power under such
trying times'', he told party workers at a felicitation at the
party headquarters `Rajiv Bhavan' here.
Thanking his party workers, particularly those at the Grassroot
level, for bringing Congress back to power, he asked them to work
to the best of their ability and responsibly for the welfare of
the state and its people.
Mr.Gogoi attributed the overwhelming victory of Congress to the
steady service of the party workers for the last five years which
helped it to win 70 of the 125 assembly seats for which the polls
were held.
Referring to the AGP-BJP alliance, Mr. Gogoi said, ``they thought
our votes could be split and take them away, but they could not
do so''. ``The AGP also tried to make alliance with the ABSU,
BLT, but even then we won'', he asserted.
