Wahid impeachment imminent
By Amit Baruah
JAKARTA, MAY 30. The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR),
country's Lower House, voted tonight to convene a special session
of the Upper House which will have the authority to impeach the
President, Mr. Abdurrahman Wahid. The Upper House will be
convened after a two- month period.
Ignoring thousands of supporters of the President who massed
outside the DPR building, and at one stage managed to break into
the Parliamentary complex, an overwhelming majority of the 500-
strong House voted to censure Mr. Wahid yet again and call a
special session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).
Late this evening, the activists began dispersing from Parliament
and moving on to the presidential palace, residence of Mr. Wahid.
Violence by the President's supporters continued in his
stronghold of East Java in which one person was killed and the
police fired in the air to disperse the agitators.
