Telephone dept. official robbed of Rs. 1.65 lakhs
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MAY. 31. A youth threw chilli powder on the face of a
telephone department supervisor and relieved him of a bag
containing Rs.1.65 lakhs near the Teynampet police station this
afternoon.
The police said Mr.Vasantharaj, supervisor in the telephone sub-
division office on Ethiraj Salai was returning from the telephone
office at Eldams Road along with salary.
A youth, posing as a telephone department employee, befriended
Mr.Vasantharaj at the Eldams Road office. He also showed him an
``official letter'' which he had to deliver urgently.
Mr.Vasantharaj allowed the youth to board the pillion of his two-
wheeler. When the vehicle was nearing the Teynampet police
station, the youth asked Mr.Vasantharaj to stop the vehicle as he
wanted to attend to the call of the nature.
When the vehicle stopped, he splashed chilli powder on
Mr.Vasantharaj's face, snatched the bag and fled with his
associate, who was waiting nearby in a two-wheeler.
