A wrong precedent
Sir, - The article `Tamil Nadu Governor's Action' (Open Page, May
29) makes every responsible citizen ponder for a while over the
state of the democratic set- up in India. It was quite shocking
that Ms. Jayalalitha was allowed to form a Government despite her
being a convicted person. By taking a hasty decision in letting
Ms. Jayalalitha become the Chief Minister, the Tamil Nadu
Governor has set a wrong precedent.
Ms. Fathima Beevi should have thought twice before taking such a
decision. She should have consulted senior Constitution experts.
As there is a great hue and cry, the Governor owes an explanation
to the people.
K. Ramachandran Mananthavady,
Wayanad (Kerala)
