Nepal King, Queen shot dead by Crown Prince Dipendra
In a shocking incident last night, Nepal's
Crown Prince Dipendra gunned down his parents, King Birendra and
Queen Aishwarya, and six other members of the royal family before
shooting himself. The Crown Prince, battling for life in hospital
today, was named the new monarch of the tiny Himalayan kingdom.
President's rule in Manipur
Manipur was brought under President's rule
tonight on the Union Cabinet's recommendation to the President
that Article 356 of the Constitution be invoked to put the State
under Central rule. The Cabinet accepted the Governor, Mr. Ved
Marwah's report that it was not possible to form a stable
government in the State.
Shock and disbelief
Nepalis were in shock on Saturday after the
King and Queen were shot dead and their family massacred, but few
could believe official reports that they were killed by Crown
Prince Dipendra.
SAARC meet put off
The special session of the SAARC standing
committee, which was to take place here next week, has been
postponed indefinitely following the assassination of the King
and Queen of Nepal and other members of the royal family, the Sri
Lankan Foreign Ministry said today.
Pak. in a dilemma
The postponement of the SAARC Standing
Committee meet has left the Pakistan Foreign Office in a dilemma
in the context of the proposed summit between the Prime Minister,
Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, and the Pakistan Chief Executive, Gen.
Pervez Musharraf.
Delhi declares three-day mourning
While declaring that ``India grieves with
Nepal'', and ordering a state mourning for three days over the
massacre of several members of the Nepal royal family, the
Vajpayee Government is keeping a close watch over the tragic
developments in the world's only Hindu kingdom.
Tearful farewell
A shocked and grief-stricken Nepal tonight bid
a tearful farewell to the assassinated King Birendra and Queen
Aishwarya as their bodies were consigned to flames near the
Pashupatinath temple on the banks of Bagmat river here.
People's Front focusses on secularism, federalism
The People's Front today unveiled its
programme, listing its priorities and underlining the issues on
which the front seeks to build itself as a viable, third
alternative at the national level. It said it was determined to
emerge as the ``real third alternative'' to both the BJP and the
Congress.
Suicide-bomb attack
In the relentless blood-letting in West Asia, a
suicide bomber blew himself up outside a popular beach-side
discotheque here leaving 18 dead and over 100 injured, police and
eyewitnesses said.
