SAARC meet put off
By Nirupama Subramanian
COLOMBO, JUNE 2. The special session of the SAARC standing
committee, which was to take place here next week, has been
postponed indefinitely following the assassination of the King
and Queen of Nepal and other members of the royal family, the Sri
Lankan Foreign Ministry said today. No new dates have been fixed.
The standing committee, which is the charter body of SAARC
Foreign Secretaries, was scheduled to meet on June 7 and 8. The
special session, called after much diplomatic exertion by Sri
Lanka, which currently holds the chair of the grouping, was
expected to kick-start the process for the SAARC summit, which
has not been held since 1998.
