Krishna water was supplied to T.N., says A.P.
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, JUNE 2. The Andhra Pradesh Government has asserted
that in 2000-2001 a quantity of 6.6 thousand million cubic (tmc)
feet of Krishna river water was supplied at the Tamil Nadu border
from the Telugu Ganga Project canal system to meet the drinking
water requirements of Chennai. ``It is, therefore, far from true
to say that water has not been supplied through the Telugu Ganga
system,'' it said.
An official statement said: ``The attention of the Government of
Andhra Pradesh has been drawn to certain newspaper reports
emanating from Chennai to the effect that the State of Tamil Nadu
has been deceived in so far as the supply of water through the
Telugu Ganga project is concerned. The State Government expresses
concern at the misinformation. Andhra Pradesh has been fulfilling
its responsibilities in terms of the inter-State agreement for
supply of water to meet the drinking water requirements of
Chennai.
``Andhra Pradesh supplied 0.076 tmcft of Krishna water in 1996,
2.869 tmcft in 1997, 2.868 tmcft in 1998 and 2.009 tmcft in 1999-
2000,'' the statement said.
It said that even before the completion of the Telugu Ganga main
canal, water was being supplied to Chennai, through the Telugu
Ganga Project infrastructure and the natural streams.
