MGR-ADMK criticises Government for 'victimisation'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 2. The MGR Anna DMK general secretary, Mr. S. Tirunavukarasu, criticised the AIADMK Government for `indiscriminate' arrest of opposition leaders in the State on `frivolous' charges.

Addressing mediapersons here today, he said the arrest of the present and former MLAs and MPs, based on `cooked' up complaints, was nothing but victimisation. ``It was unfortunate the police did not even verify whether prima face cases existed against the arrested persons''.

Charging that these arrests were made at the behest of the Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalitha, he said she continued to be vindictive and her recent activities had only disproved the claim of her allies that she had changed or mellowed down.

On the appointment of Mr. W. I. Dawaram as the chief of the Special Task Force (STF), he hoped that the appointment was not meant for `rewarding' him for his `loyalty to her' but for nabbing the forest brigand Veerappan.

Refuting the Chief Minister's allegation that he had betrayed her in the past, Mr. Tirunavukarasu said on the other hand it was she, who ditched those who were instrumental in her political ascendancy.

Claiming that the party had done well in the recent Assembly elections winning two of three seats contested, he hinted that the party would have won more seats if it had been allotted more constituencies.

The party would continue to remain in the NDA front and there was no question of withdrawing from it, he added.
