Vahid demands new department for city development

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 2. The Kazhakuttom MLA, Mr. M.A. Vahid, has urged the Government to create a new department headed by a Minister to expedite the development of the capital city.

Addressing a Press conference here today, he suggested setting up of satellite townships at Nemom and Kazhakuttom to avoid congestion in the city and pave the way for horizontal expansion.

Mr. Vahid said the new department would help to augment infrastructure and basic facilities to cater to the increasing population in the capital.

Mr. Vahid who had contested as an Independent from the Kazhakuttom Assembly to protest the UDF decision to concede the seat to the IUML, expressed his desire to be included in the Congress block in the Assembly.

He said he had conveyed his request to the Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, the KPCC president, Mr. K. Muraleedharan, and the UDF convener, Mr. Oommen Chandy.

To a question, he said he would remain a disciplined Congress worker and would not go against the party's interests in the Assembly. He claimed that he had contested the elections, not as a rebel but as an Independent candidate to fulfil the aspirations of the local people. Mr. Vahid said he had appealed to the leadership to withdraw his expulsion from the party.

Asked about the legal battle over the alleged irregularities in the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation when he was the Opposition Leader in the council, Mr. Vahid said he would continue with the litigation.
