CBI looking into charges against Mascarenhas
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JUNE 8. The CBI is looking into the allegations of
corruption and irregularities against the suspended Air-India
Managing Director, Mr. Michael P. Mascarenhas, and others.
Following a direction from the Government for a comprehensive
probe into the allegations pertaining to AI, the agency has
already registered a Preliminary Enquiry (PE).
Well-placed sources in the CBI said the PE was registered on
Thursday night by the Anti-Corruption Unit at the CBI
headquarters after the agency examined a request from the Civil
Aviation Ministry to probe the allegations last month.
Mr. Mascarenhas along with another senior official was suspended
on May 23 on charges of corruption and irregularities. The
Government had asked the CBI to thoroughly inquire into the
allegations against the AI Managing Director pertaining to undue
favours shown to the airline's general sales agent in London.
The Ministry's Chief Vigilance Officer and the Joint Secretary,
in his report, had alleged overpayment of Rs. 57 crores to the
London GSA.
