Coalminers' strike from today

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR, JUNE 8. Due to the alleged `adamant attitude' and `delaying tactics' of the management and the Government in settling the long-pending issues, the Singareni workers have decided to go on an indefinite strike from Saturday first shift onwards, according to the Singareni Collieries trade unions Joint Action Committee convener, Mr. Y. Gattaiah.

Talking to press persons at Godavarikhani on Friday, the JAC convener and AITUC-affiliated Singareni Collieries workers' union general secretary, Mr. Gattaiah said the employees were forced to go on strike as the Government was not responding favourably to the coal workers' plight.

He reiterated that the strike would continue until their demands were met.

Mr. Gattaiah said they had served a strike notice on the SCCL management and the Government on April 20 that they would go on strike from June 9 demanding solution to their long-pending problems.

On May 8, the Chief Minister invited them for discussions and promised to consider three main demands - payment of arrears, abolition of profession tax and employment to dependent children.

But, the management failed to implement those demands and also the charter of 24 demands, and again called for discussions, adopting delaying tactics in solving them, he alleged.

He said that the Government had invited them for talks on Friday also, but they refused stating that they would go on strike and later participate in discussions. ``We will call off the agitation only when the demands are accepted'', he said.
