Work on BMP stadium in full swing
By Govind D.Belgaumkar
BANGALORE, JUNE 8. A long-felt need of the sport-lovers of
Bangalore South and West for a stadium may be fulfilled in a
year's time if all goes well as per the schedule.
The stadium coming up at Brindavan Nagar, opposite the Deer Park
in the vicinity of the Kempambudhi Tank, promises much more than
one could hope for: a place for all indoor and outdoor games,
barring kabaddi and kho-kho.
It is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 10 crores on a sprawling
6.75-acre plot of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP). Work on
the stadium started about nine months ago, and over half of it
has been completed.
Fortunately, it is not a mere cricket stadium, though cricket-
crazy youngsters could engage themselves in net practice
simultaneously at three places. Cricket will only be a part of
the complex.
A unique feature of the stadium would be an indoor auditorium
which is under construction. It can accommodate about 400 people.
Mr. K.Chandrasekhar, Councillor from Hanumanthanagar, who was
instrumental in getting the proposal for the stadium sanctioned
by the BMP, said the stadium after completion would help organise
cultural as well as sports events under a single roof.
The stadium will have rooms for sports personalities, a pavilion
and indoor stadia for games such as badminton (two courts),
basket ball, volley ball, squash, table tennis, billiards,
aerobics, chess and carrom. It will also have a skating rink.
Besides an athletic track, the stadium will have facilities to
organise events such as long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot
put, and hammer, discuss and javelin throw.
While 700 people can watch basketball in the indoor stadium,
about 60 to 70 people can watch badminton. The grand stand will
house about 2,500 people.
The indoor stadia will be provided with state-of-the-art lighting
facility. The carrom and chess rooms will have 12 tables each.
The stadium will have two courts with synthetic floor for tennis,
two for basket ball, volley ball and hand ball. It will have a
health club and a running track, which can be used for morning
walks and jogging. The authorities have plans to have a public
library, built-in music system for aerobics section, a health
club with steam and sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, karate and
boxing rings, warm-up halls, and a room to conduct yoga classes.
Mr. Chandrashekar expressed the hope that the stadium will be
completed by June 2002 as scheduled.
