Red alert in Manipur
By Our Correspondent
IMPHAL, JUNE 15. Security measures have been beefed up on an
unprecedented scale in all parts of Manipur to ensure that there
is no untoward incident in the aftermath of the extension of the
ceasefire with the NSCN(IM) to the Naga-populated areas in north-
eastern States.
Prohibitory orders were imposed under Section 144 of the Cr.PC in
all trouble-prone areas. An official report said security
personnel were patrolling in Naga-dominated areas. Terming the
extension as ``step-motherly treatment'', the State Assembly
Speaker, Mr. S. Dhananjoy, said though the Assembly had been kept
under suspended animation, the Centre should have consulted all
the 60 MLAs.
At a meeting organised in the Assembly complex today, Mr.
Dhananjoy announced that all the MLAs were prepared to resign
enmasse in protest against the ceasefire extension. The people and
the State Government's opposition to the ceasefire stems out of
the fear that the extension will made use of while demanding the
creation of ``greater Nagaland''.
