Bid to blow up U.S. Embassy in New Delhi; 2 held
By Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar
NEW DELHI, JUNE 15. An attempt by international terrorist, Osama
bin Laden, to blast the United States Embassy here has been
foiled by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police in coordination
with the Intelligence Bureau after the arrest of two suspected
terrorists, including a Sudanese national, and recovery of high-
intensity explosives.
Police sources said the two men were sent by Osama bin Laden -
who was behind the attacks on U.S. missions in Somalia, Egypt and
Sudan - to carry out a devastating attack on the U.S. Embassy
here.
The two, Abdel Raouf Hawash, the Sudanese national, who had been
in Udaipur, Rajasthan, for about 10 years and Shamim Sarvar from
Bihar - were caught near a park in the Nizamuddin area by a
Special Cell team led by Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma under the
supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Rajbir
Singh, on Friday afternoon.
A high-intensity improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered
from the two.
The terrorists had planned a car-bomb explosion at the embassy
and were on the look-out for a suitable vehicle.
The Delhi police and the Intelligence Bureau have been working on
a tip-off about a probable attack on the embassy for nearly two
months. Interrogation of the two arrested revealed that they had
been visiting Delhi frequently and combing the diplomatic area
extensively.
