Police official refuses to surrender
MUMBAI, JUNE 15. Former Police Commissioner, Mr. R.D. Tyagi,
today rejected the Government's suggestion in the Mumbai High
Court asking him to surrender forthwith in a case of 1993 riots
and demanded five days notice before placing him under arrest so
that he could move for anticipatory bail afresh.
Mr. Justice A.B. Palkar adjourned Mr. Tyagi's anticipatory bail
plea to June 18 as the Government's counsel sought time to seek
instructions from the State whether it would be possible to give
him advance notice of his arrest.
Mr. Tyagi filed an anticipatory bail petition in the High Court
after the Special Task Force filed an FIR on May 25 last against
him and 16 policemen who resorted to firing in Suleman Usman
bakery here leading to the death of nine persons of a minority
community during communal riots eight years ago.
Mr. Tyagi, who was then the Joint Commissioner of Police, is
charged with issuing orders to his personnel to open fire.
