Sikkim reserves 30 p.c. of Govt. jobs for women

GANGTOK, JUNE 15. Sikkim has reserved 30 per cent of State Government jobs for women besides already retaining 33 per cent of seats for women at the Panchayat level in conformity with its principle to ensure their true empowerment, the Chief Minister, Mr. Pawan Chamling has said.

``In line with the decision to give more representation to women who are disadvantaged in the society, we effected the reservation of seats for them at the Panchayat level in 1997,'' Mr. Chamling said.

``It was my Government which created history in the State by electing a woman Speaker in the Assembly, besides making a woman as Minister and a woman as zilla panchayat president,'' the Chief Minister said while addressing a function on `Women's Empowerment Year 2001' here on Thursday.
