Case against Karunanidhi for SIT

CHENNAI, JUNE 15. The case of alleged harassment of Muslim
prisoners, registered against six persons, including the former
Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, has been transferred from the
city police to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CB-
CID.
The city police registered the case under IPC sections including
those pertaining to causing grievous injury, criminal
intimidation and conspiracy after VII Metropolitan Magistrate,
George Town, had forwarded a complaint made at the Fort police
station for enquiry and report.
In the complaint to the court, Mr. Preethi Basker of Vadapalani
here, alleged that the Muslim prisoners were tortured in custody.
Besides Mr. Karunanidhi, those cited in the complaint are the
retired DGP, Mr. F. C. Sharma, the former Home Secretary, Ms.
Shanta Sheela Nair, the former Inspector-General of Prison, Mr.
K.V.S. Murthy, and the Superintendents of Central Prisons in
Chennai and Vellore, Mr. Ramachandran and Mr. Balachandran.
The case was transferred as the SIT, CB-CID, dealt with cases
relating to religious fundamentalism, according to police
sources.
