Ansari justifies charges against DMK chief

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, JUNE 15. An undertrial in the Coimbatore serial blasts case and newly elected leader of the Al-Umma, Mohammed Ansari, today justified the charges against the former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi and said Muslim prisoners were subjected to torture during his regime.

This has come as a rebuttal of the observation made by Mr. Karunanidhi that the AIADMK Government was foisting a case, when the persons concerned (Muslim prisoners) had not made any charges.

(A case was filed against him on Thursday, following a public interest litigation petition filed by Mr. Preethi Baskaran, an AIADMK functionary.)

Ansari coming out of the Second Additional District Sessions Court here told newsmen that Muslim prisoners had remained in prison for more than three years without trial and were kept in isolation for more than 18 months.

``Even our right to worship was infringed upon. We could not even see sunlight and breath fresh air during the five- year imprisonment. Our efforts to move court went in vain. The high- level inquiry committee appointed by the DMK Government was an eye-wash'', he said, expressing hope that justice would be rendered now.

Earlier, the judge adjourned the proceedings in the constable Selvaraj murder case to July 12.
