Serious racing, Go-Kart style

WALTER I. DAWARAM on a Sunday evening, sporting a golf cap, attired in a vintage suit, was on a different beat. On a different track at MRF Danny's Karting.

The super-cop's watchful eyes were trained on the little racing machines, the go-karts, at the eve of the Servo Go- Kart Challenge.

He landed on time and flagged off the first race featuring toddlers, on the dot. The veteran's time-discipline remains what it always used to be.

At the go-karting race tracks of Navalur village, it was a quite a familiar crowd. The regulars, were all there.

The excitement started soon after the Juniors (Below 10 years) marched to their respective karts, helmets in hand.

Here was an occasion where they didn't need a license to drive. What with a cop in the stature of Walter himself, flagging off the race.

It was all over in a few minutes. Seven year old Vishnu Prasad came first, Imran Khan (8) came second and six and half year old Rufus N.Patrik finished third.

Next, it was the turn of children between 10 and 17 years of age.

At the end of it, eleven year old Anand Prasad, Aditya Patel (12) K. and sibling Akshya Patel K. (11) stood on the victory stand in the first, second and third positions respectively.

Soon, it was the turn of the ladies to take to the wheel. Sangeetha G.N. (23), Naazia Sultana (10) and Rejoice Imanual (25) were crowned winners.

That's when Walter decided to call it an evening, and walked to his car and we caught up with him to quiz him on his interest in racing. With a smile, he shook his head. ``I'm more into athletics...I am the President of an athletics association. The hockey, volleyball, football...not racing,'' he admitted.

But he did have fun, he said. ``I have been here before,'' he said. ``He had inaugurated the track earlier,'' Mr.Sherif Dyan a.k.a Danny added.

It turned out that, the supercop was there at the request of the management and their employee Mrs. Dawaram.

The couple left together soon after that as the races for the evening continued.

And the heroes of the evening were Anand Prasad A., Preetham M., Fazal Khan and Sanju Anto who all came first in their respective categories. But that's another story.

For Walter, it was time to prepare for yet another chase. A race he would love to win, especially after waking up the very next morning to learn that he was the leader of the joint operations to nab Veerappan.
