Zap computer scam: 4 held in Mumbai

MUMBAI, JUNE 16. Four Mumbai-based directors of Zap Infotech, a computer academy, were arrested at Goregaon in north-west Mumbai on Friday for allegedly duping several students who had enrolled for various short and long-term computer courses at the academy.

Police said today that all 13 centres of Zap Infotech had shut down in the last three days without any prior notice to students who had invested between Rs. 17,000 and Rs. 25,000 for training courses. The accused - Praveen Sonalkar, Hozefa Vohra, Mohanlal Mehta and Tanvir Zakir - were arrested under Sections 420, 406 for cheating and criminal breach of trust and remanded to police custody till June 21.

The main office of the institute was sealed following an FIR filed by a student. Earlier, the New Delhi Police had arrested Mohsin Rupani, an official of Zap Computers and, brother-in-law of one of the owners, Arif Mithani, in Goregaon on June 13.

Zap Computers, which was recently floated in a big way with more than 200 branches across the country, is alleged to have collected crores of rupees.

Zap and its sister concern - Wintech - had promised several computer courses and charged hefty sums from students.
