Thyagaraja festival at Tirupati
TIRUPATI, JUNE 16. The title `Sapthagiri Sangeetha Vidwan Mani'
will be conferred on the veteran vocalist M.S. Balasubramanya
Sarma at the `sadas' to be held here on July 29 as part of the
Thyagaraja Festival. This was decided at the festival committee
meeting held under the presidentship of Dr. P. Krishnaiah,
Executive Officer, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. Dr. Krishnaiah
referred to the contribution of Sarma for over six decades to the
cause of Carnatic music. Ms. V.S. Rama Devi, Governor of
Karnataka, will confer the title. The award carries a gold medal,
a citation, a shawl and a cash award of Rs. 5,000 (annually given
by Mr. Obul Reddy).
As in the past few years, on the inaugural day, July 25, the
idols of Lord Kodhandaramaswami and other deities will be brought
in a procession to the Thyagaraja Temple premises.
A number of music and dance concerts and lecture demonstrations
will be held. The inaugural concert will be by P. Unnikrishnan.
Senior artistes such as T.N. Krishnan, Nookala, Sikkil Sisters,
Hyderabad Sisters, Prapancham Sitaram, Pudukottai Krishnamurthy,
Parur M.S. Anantharaman and sons, Aruna Sayeeram and upcoming
artistes such as Geetha Rajasekhar, Lakshmi Rangarajan, Geetha
Krishnamurthy, V.N. Padmini, Ranjani Gayathri Sisters, Pantula
Rama, T.S. Sathyavathi, Dwaram Lakshmi, Balakrishna Prasad,
Padmavathy, Sridevi and Gayathri Venkataraghavan will also
perform. There will be two dance programmes and a harikatha
performance by Bhaskara Sarma and nadaswaram recital by Vaduvur
Krishnamurthi.
Messrs. M. Krishnaswami, Chairman, Sri Thyagaraja Trust, and K.V.
Ranganathan, general secretary, thanked the Executive Officer for
his help.
