Agency for development of Bangalore planned
By S.K. Ramoo
BANGALORE, JUNE 16. The State Government plans to establish a
Bangalore Metropolitan Development Council or some such
organisation to function as an apex body for the overall and
orderly development of Bangalore.
A Cabinet sub-committee, headed by the Law and Parliamentary
Affairs Minister, Mr. D.B. Chandre Gowda which met on Friday,
held the first round of discussions on the broad outlines of the
proposed new organisation. A suggestion was made that the
organisation should be headed by the Chief Minister, who could
provide the required authority for undertaking several schemes
for the planned growth of the City and its infrastructure.
The sub-committee at its next meeting would consider whether to
introduce the "Mayor in Council" type of administration for the
Bangalore Mahanagara Palike on the lines of the Calcutta City
Corporation. The sub-committee would also discuss whether there
was a need for the direct election of the Mayor of Bangalore as
in Chennai. The sub-committee would also be deliberating on the
future of several government agencies functioning in Bangalore,
including BWSSB, KPTCL and the Slum Clearance Board. A proposal
to merge seven town municipal councils located around Bangalore
with the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike would also be deliberated
upon by the sub-committee.
The subject of raising or mobilising resources for the
development of infrastructure would also be discussed. Prof. B.K.
Chandrashekar, Minister of State for Information, Mr. D.K.
Shivakumar, Minister for Cooperation, Mr. A. Krishnappa, Minister
for Animal Husbandry, and Mr. Mallikarjuna Nagappa, Minister of
State for Urban Development are the members of the sub-committee.
