'Provide insurance cover to unorganised labour'
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 16. The Pondicherry Lt.Governor, Dr.Rajani Rai,
today said insurance awareness was at a low ebb even among the
educated sections.
Inaugurating the 89th council meeting of the Insurance Institute
of India here, she called for launching a sustained campaign to
create an awareness of the crucial role of insurance during
hazards. Though there was a number of life and non-life insurance
companies promoted by public sector organisations, a vast chunk
of unorganised labour was still left out. She wanted appropriate
programmes to be introduced to cover such vulnerable sections.
She said the Pondicherry Administration introduced a Group Life
Insurance scheme to cover the agricultural labourers. Mr.D.
Sengupta, Chairman, General Insurance Corporation of India, and
president of the Institute, referred to the Institute's growth
and its contribution to the skills of the employees. After the
Insurance Regulatory and Development Act was passed, it was made
mandatory that there should be 100 hours of training for the
employees.
The facility for taking the test conducted by the Institute
online had benefited a good number of candidates. He also
referred to the steps taken to integrate the Institute with those
in foreign countries.
He said there was a need for formulating new courses in risk
management, health care management and pension management.
