Cong. to leave it to district units

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JUNE 19. The Congress poll strategy for the coming Panchayat Raj elections was discussed at a meeting presided over by the APCC president, Mr. M. Satyanarayana Rao, on Wednesday. It was decided that the selection of the candidates be left entirely to the district leadership.

The DCC presidents, the observers appointed by the PCC chief and the local leaders would sit and finalise the names of the ZPTC and MPTC candidates. The PCC would endorse these names.

The former Chief Minister, Mr.N. Janardhan Reddy, suggested that the names of Zilla Parishad candidates be kept secret till the completion of the ZPTC and MPTC elections. The suggestion was accepted by the meeting.

Mr. Satyanarayana Rao said the PCC would not interfere with the selection of the candidates. He stressed that the winning chances be the main criterion in selecting the candidates and that the group rivalries be set aside to ensure the victory of the party.

The AICC secretary in charge of AP, Mr. Daljit Singh also called for unity among party leaders to face the challenge from the TDP. Mr.V. Hanumantha Rao, another AICC secretary, said there was no need to appoint observers on behalf of the Youth Congress as PCC observers could handle the selection efficiently.

Some DCC presidents voiced concern over the disunity in the party and the serious differences among senior leaders. One of them suggested that the seniors campaign jointly in the elections to exhibit the unity in the party.

The CWC member, Mrs. Sarojini Pulla Reddy, and many former Ministers participated in the discussions.
