Kore, Umashree among 5 nominated to Council

BANGALORE, JUNE 19. Five persons, including the Kannada film actress, Ms. Umashree, have been nominated to the Legislative Council.

The long-awaited nominations to the Upper House were notified by the Governor, Ms. V.S. Rama Devi, on Tuesday night.

Mr. Prabhakar Kore, a former MP and a prominent Lingayat leader from Belgaum District, the noted Dalit poet, Prof. L. Hanumanthaiah, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary, Mr. B.A. Hasanabba, belonging to the Muslim community, Ms. Umashree, a popular Kannada film artiste belonging to Backward Caste (Kuruhinashetty), and Mr. Ramesh Raju, a Vokkaliga from Mandya District and a close associate of the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M. Krishna, have been nominated to the Legislative Council.

Baring Prof. Hanumanthaiah, all others are Congress activists.

The five Council seats fell vacant on May 11 after Dr. Siddalingaiah, Prof. Ejasuddin, Dr. H.L. Nage Gowda, Mr. Mahadev Banakar and Ms. Sarita Kusumakar Desai retired on completion of their term.
