He is no rubber stamp
Sir, - This refers to the two letters (June 16) disapproving of
the President's support for the relaxing of marks for SCs/STs in
the medical entrance tests for PG courses. Mr. K. R. Narayanan
came out with his views only when the Madhya Pradesh Chief
Minister, Mr. Digvijay Singh, wrote to him on the subject. The
President has demonstrated on crucial occasions that he is not a
rubber stamp. For example, he rebuffed the attempts by the
regimes of Mr. I. K. Gujral and Mr. A. B. Vajpayee to dismiss the
Kalyan Singh and Rabri Devi Governments in U.P. and Bihar and
saved the States from constitutional and political crises. The
President's wise counsel on crucial issues has enhanced not only
his prestige but also of the highest office of the land that he
holds.
C. R. Narayanan,
Cuddalore
