Advani's deposition
Sir, - The deposition of the Home Minister, Mr. L. K. Advani
before the Justice Liberhan Commission about the withdrawal of
the ordinance by the then Prime Minister, Mr. V. P. Singh, to
acquire the land around the disputed Ayodhya structure and refer
the issue to the Supreme Court: had Mr. Singh not done that at
that time the Government would have earned the bad repute of
being sectarian and partisan in its action.
Mr. Advani feels proud of having participated in the Ayodhya
movement but he ignores the fact that this culminated in the
demolition of the Ayodhya Masjid and communal riots. The
indication is clear that history is manoeuvred to suit a slanted
agenda in contemporary politics and the movement was organised to
achieve that narrow and short-sighted objective.
One has to understand role of Mughal rulers. They ruled for a
longer period than the British and had they been oppressive and
intolerant they would not have survived for a thousand years.
On the other hand, they identified themselves with Indian culture
and civilisation which manifested itself in the form of
historical monuments and music.
