By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 19.

Various social and political organisations and eminent persons have hailed the decision of the Delhi Cabinet to waive off the Rs. 42-lakh housing loan and interest outstanding against nearly 700 families of the November 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims. In a significant statement here today, the Shiromani Akali Dal, Delhi, complimented the Chief Minister, Ms. Sheila Dikshit, for taking this long over-due step. Terming the decision as a big relief for hundreds of affected people, the Shiromani Akali Dal president, Mr. Pramjit Singh Sarna, Prof. Joginder Singh, Dr. Harminder Singh, Mr. Nirwair Singh, Mr. Gurcharan Singh, Mr. Baldev Singh and Mr. Harvinder Pal Singh, in a joint statement said it was a noble act and would go a long way in helping the victims.

The statement urged the Chief Minister to monitor personally the writing off process of loans so that the decision of the Delhi Cabinet is actually implemented and does not remain on paper. They thanked her for paying attention to the plight of riots victims.

In another statement, the Trans-Yamuna Ekta Manch president, Mr. Balwinder Singh and Mr. Jasvinder Singh, president, Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, welcomed the decision to write off the loans. They said it was a historic step by the Congress(I) Government and would ease the burden on riot victims who were not in a position to repay their loans. They said the step was a well thought out and timely move and Ms. Dikshit had shown true concern for Sikhs affected by the November 84 riots.

The Gandhi Nagar MLA and East District Congress Committee(I) president, Mr. Arvinder Singh Lovely, also welcomed the decision. The matter, he said, had been pending for many years and it was a matter of great pride that a Congress(I) Government was now implementing it. He said this decision had clearly shown that it was the Congress(I) which was the true saviour of the Sikh community and would stand by them in their hour of crisis. He complimented the Delhi Cabinet for endorsing this decision which would help in providing relief to people who were living on meagre means.
