Canberra voices concern
CANBERRA, JUNE 21. Australia today voiced concern over the
elevation of Pakistan's military ruler, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, to
the Presidency.
``We'd be concerned if this represents another step away from
moves to restore democracy in Pakistan,'' said a spokesman for
the Australian Foreign Minister, Mr. Alexander Downer.
``We remain deeply concerned at the unconstitutional ousting of
Pakistan's democratically-elected Government.''
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Brisbane
in October will consider a recommendation that stronger measures
be taken against Pakistan if no progress is made soon towards the
restoration of democracy.
