'Summit must announce freeze on n-programmes'

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, JULY 1. Anti-nuclear organisations of India and Pakistan have called upon the two countries to announce, during the Vajpayee-Musharraf summit, a ban on the development of nuclear arms. They have said that instead of acquiring the status of `nuclear country', India and Pakistan should focus their attention on global nuclear disarmament.

A resolution of the Pakistan Peace Coalition and the Indian Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace calls upon the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, and Pakistan President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, to announce freezing of their nuclear programmes at the summit meeting. It calls for stoppage of missile experiments, and for evolving a system of constant contact between the two armies for building confidence. Issuing this resolution on behalf of the Indian organisation, former Naval chief, Admiral (Retd.) L. Ramdas, has said that during the summit the leaders of India and Pakistan should agree to the proposal to end the nuclear arms race.

Workers of the two organisations have decided to hold a conference in Delhi on July 12 and make a list of demands to be presented to the leaders.
