NDA team for stern action against T.N. Govt.
The National Democratic Alliance today passed
the Tamil Nadu ``hot potato'' on to the Prime Minister and the
Union Cabinet by demanding that the Centre take ``exemplary and
stern action'' against the State Government and those police
officials who had inflicted ``brutality'' on two Union Ministers
and others on June 30.
T.N. Govt. orders release of Maran, Baalu
The Tamil Nadu Government today ordered the
release of Union Ministers, Mr. Murasoli Maran and Mr. T. R.
Baalu, who were held for alleged assault of State police
personnel during the arrest of the former Chief Minister, Mr.
Karunanidhi on June 30.
Karunanidhi not to press for bail
The DMK president and former Chief Minister, Mr.
M. Karunanidhi, today decided not to press for bail in the
alleged fly-over scam case in which he has been arrested.
Protest against Jayalalithaa's visit
The demonstrations by the BJP-Bharatiya Janata
Yuva Morcha workers during the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms.
Jayalalithaa's visit to the Guruvayur temple, led to a clash
between the protesters and the law-enforcers, in which three
persons were injured, one of them seriously, and nine arrested.
SC hearing on Karunanidhi arrest on July 9
The Supreme Court will hear after July 9 a
writ petition challenging the arrest and detention of the former
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi and the two Union
Ministers, Mr. Murasoli Maran and Mr. T.R. Baalu (detenus), by
the Tamil Nadu Government authorities concerned.
BJP sees 'anarchy'in T.N., Cong. chides call for President's rule
The release of the two Union Ministers in
Chennai did little to prevent the BJP and the Congress from
taking up the cudgels for their allies. Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, Union
Minister for Rural Development, issued an oblique warning saying
that the Centre was studying the situation and would `act
appropriately at the appropriate time and it will not be too
late'.
Jayalalithaa effigy burnt in Vavuniya
A delegation of Tamil leaders representing 11
political parties today handed over a memorandum addressed to the
Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, protesting the arrest
of the former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, to the Indian
High Commissioner here.
RS polls in T.N. on July 23
The Election Commission today announced that
biennial elections to six seats from Tamil Nadu for the Rajya
Sabha would be held on July 23. The notification will be issued
on July 6.
Prabhakar arrested
The former cricketer, Mr. Manoj Prabhakar (at
right), was today arrested by the Uttaranchal police from his
office in Delhi in the cheating case registered against him in
Haldwani district.
Momentum as Pak. team in Delhi
A two-member official team from Pakistan is in
New Delhi to finalise the security and protocol arrangements for
the visit of the Pakistani President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf,
between July 14 to 16.
