Jayalalithaa effigy burnt in Vavuniya
By Nirupama Subramanian
COLOMBO, JULY 2. A delegation of Tamil leaders representing 11
political parties today handed over a memorandum addressed to the
Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, protesting the arrest
of the former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, to the Indian
High Commissioner here.
The members of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO)
burnt the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa's effigy on
Sunday in the northern Sri Lankan town of Vavuniya and shouted
slogans against her. A similar demonstration is planned for
Tuesday in the north-western district of Mannar.
The memorandum said the arrest was a ``blatant display of brutal
vengeance'' against a leader held in high esteem by the Tamil-
speaking people of Sri Lanka.
