City experiences 'revival' of monsoon

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JULY 2. Monday evening had an unexpected, but rather slushy, treat in store for Bangaloreans. It saw the State's long- awaited monsoon being ``revived''.

``Revival'' was the word used by the Director of the Meteorological Centre here, Dr. Anand L. Koppar. He told The Hindu that the evening's showers did not signify the ``beginning'' of the rainy season. ``Rather its revival,'' he said.

He said citizens could now expect ``normal'' rainfall throughout the month. ``Of course, it will not rain every day because every long monsoon cycle has alternating active and weak phases,'' he explained.

Asked why the monsoon had been delayed, Dr. Koppar pointed out that other parts of the country such as Central India had experienced ``good rain''. ``In a large country like ours, some parts get more, some less. Interior Karnataka, for example, has been going through a bad patch,'' he said.

Rain began around 5 p.m. on Monday evening and continued for a few hours. At 7 p.m. it was still raining ``heavily'' in parts of the City.

Dr. Koppar said that June ``almost'' saw a record of sorts. ``It almost became the driest June in 40 years. But then, it rained 10 mm. on the last day of the month,' he added.
