PoK goes to polls today
By B. Muralidhar Reddy
ISLAMABAD, JULY 4. The general election to the 40-member
Legislative Assembly in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) will be
held tomorrow.
The election will be conducted under the supervision of the
Pakistan army and a group of international observers.
It would be fought mainly between the ruling People's Party, led
by the Prime Minister, Mr. Sultan Mohmood Chaudhary and the
Muslim Conference chief and former Prime Minister and President
of PoK, Mr. Sardar Qayyum.
An estimated two millions Kashmiris will take part in the
elections for 40 Legislative seats. While 28 are PoK seats, 12
are `refugee' seats.
The refugee seats are spread in different parts of Pakistan and
the general view is that the Government of the day in Islamabad
decides who gets the chunk of seats from the refugee category.
