Former judge to probe 'police excesses' in T.N.

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JULY 7. The Tamil Nadu Government today appointed a Commission of Inquiry to probe allegations of ``police excesses'' during the arrest of former Chief Minister and DMK president, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, and the Union Ministers, Mr. Murasoli Maran and Mr. T.R. Baalu.

The appointment of an inquiry commission headed by Mr. Justice A. Raman, a retired judge of the Madras High Court, comes in the wake of the Central Government's directive to the Tamil Nadu Government to initiate action against the policemen who had indulged in ``excesses'' on June 29 and 30, while effecting the controversial arrests.

The Commission would also inquire into whether police personnel were ``physically assaulted and obstructed from discharging their legitimate duties'' during the arrest of Mr. Karunanidhi and thereafter on June 30.

An official press release said the Commission set up under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952, would give its report within three months to the Tamil Nadu Government.

The four-point terms and reference of the Commission include: inquiry into incidents that led to the arrest of Mr. Maran and Mr. Baalu; and examine whether there were any lapses on the part of police and, if so, suggest the action to be taken against such erring police personnel.
