Basu turns 88
KOLKATA, JULY 8. The young and the old greeted the former West
Bengal Chief Minister and senior Marxist leader Mr. Jyoti Basu,
who celebrated his 88th birthday today.
Mr. Basu, who stepped down as Chief Minister in November last
year after heading the State for 24 years, cheerfully accepted
the birthday wishes at his residence, Indira Bhawan.
A band ofschoolchildren carrying pictures of the CPI(M) politburo
member arrived in large numbers and presented flowers and
garlands. In turn, Mr. Basu seemed to have cast aside his normal
taciturn self as he patted the children in affection. He was also
seen asking his aides to ensure that several old men who came to
greet him did not face any problem. A delegation of sisters from
the Missionaries of Charity and the small inmates from Mother
Teresa's homes also called on Mr. Basu.
