DMK man attacked

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JULY 8. A DMK party functionary, Mr. Velu, was attacked by a gang which carried revolvers and opened fire here today. The miscreants also used several countrymade bombs.

According to police, Mr. Velu was returning home on his vehicle with his family members after attending a function in Munichalai. At Obulapadithurai, a gang coming in an autorickshaw threw bombs at his vehicle. Two youths who came in a motorcycle pulled out revolvers and opened fire.

Mr. Velu drove his vehicle over the two-wheeler knocking down the youth. In the melee, the gang escaped. One of the two, Arasu of Keerathurai, was nabbed by Mr. Velu and later taken into police custody.

Tension prevailed in the area for sometime after the incident and shopkeepers downed their shutters. Previous enmity is said to be the cause of the attack.
