SPPs for Special Courts yet to be appointed

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JULY 8. Nearly two months have gone by after the new government took over, but the process of appointing the Special Public Prosecutors (SPPs) for the Special Courts has not been completed.

With the result, recording of evidence in the cases concerned pending before two courts are being adjourned when they come up for hearing.

The delay in appointing the SPPs has prompted the Special Judges- I and III to send a communication to the High Court authorities on the matter, official sources say.

A total of eight cases registered by the CB-CID and the DVAC are pending before the three courts. After the resignation of the SPPs appointed during the DMK rule, the AIADMK Government appointed the new SPP for the Special Court-II to handle the two cases relating to `coal import deal' and the `disproportionate wealth' against the former Chief Secretary, Mr. N. Haribhaskar, and trial has recommenced.

As regards the Special Court-III, an SPP had taken over the case relating to `TANSI-R.R. Industries'. The Government has issued the order appointing an SPP for the remaining three cases relating to `free dhoti/saree', JJTC and `free chappals' scams. During the hearing in the JJTC scam case on Friday, the SPP gave a copy of the appointment order to the court. No memo of appearance was filed.

No new prosecutor has been appointed for both the cases - pertaining to the `fire service scam' and the `disproportionate wealth' against Ms. Jayalalithaa - pending before the Special Judge-I.
