Enquire into all post-poll incidents: DPI

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, JULY 8. The DPI convener, Mr. R. Thirumavalavan, has demanded an enquiry by the Central Government not only into the circumstances leading to the arrest of the DMK president, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, but also into all the incidents which caused law and order problems in the State after the AIADMK came to power.

Talking to presspersons here today, Mr. Thirumavalavan termed as ``a fraud'' the act of the State Government of constituting a one-man commission of inquiry to go into the circumstances that led to Mr. Karunanidhi's arrest. Instead, it should have taken action against the ``erring'' police officials who behaved in an ``inhuman manner'' with the DMK chief.

The AIADMK Government should have acted on the orders issued by the Centre on the basis of the reports submitted by the Union Home Ministry team and the NDA team which visited the State after the arrest.

On the demand for invoking Article 356 of the Constitution to impose President's rule in the State, he said the Centre need not hesitate to do so in view of the ``insecure atmosphere'' prevailing in Tamil Nadu in the wake of the ``police raj'' let loose by the AIADMK Government. The Government's sole agenda appeared to be indulging in a ``political vendetta''.

Demanding a judicial enquiry into the police firing on DPI activists who resorted to agitations in Sathyavadi and Vazhapattu in Cuddalore district and Pakkam in Viluppuram district seeking his release when he was lodged in the central prison, Vellore, Mr. Thirumavalavan reiterated that the CBI should prove the murder of Mudakkathan Pandi, party's State treasurer.

The AIADMK government had let loose police repression on Dalits in general and on the DPI cadres in particular, as could be seen by the destruction of DPI flag posts in different parts of Vellore district and the pulling down of the party name-boards in Salem. A judicial enquiry alone would put an end to these disturbing trends, he said.
