PT chief demands CBI probe

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JULY 8. The Puthiya Tamizhagam leader, Dr. K. Krishnasamy, has demanded a CBI enquiry into the series of developments that culminated in the ``dramatic'' arrest of the former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, on June 30.

Talking to presspersons here today, he said the sudden transfer of the Director General of Police and other officials, days before the arrest of Mr. Karunanidhi, indicated that the moves were ``well organised''.

The Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, was ``nonchalantly'' using the official machinery to avenge political rivals in violation of the basic principles of the Constitution. The arrest of Mr. Karunanidhi, the assault on scribes and the attack on the house of a district sessions judge was a clear indication that the AIADMK chief would not tolerate resistance from any quarters, he charged. ``She is out to terrorise and demoralise the democratically functioning Opposition parties, the judiciary and the press''.

The one-man Commission appointed to probe the allegations of ``police high-handedness'' would only reflect the views of the Government, he alleged.

The two-month old AIADMK rule recorded absolutely no development in the State and the voters were feeling betrayed. The drinking water problem in Chennai and other districts continued unabated, he said.

Since the State Government was not ``law-abiding'', the Centre should enact a law to bring all the Civil Service officers in Tamil Nadu under its control. The Puthiya Tamizhagam would organise agitations all over the State after July 15 to condemn the arrest of Mr. Karunanidhi.

On the possibility of the PMK merging again with the NDA, he said it was too early to comment on it.
