Master plan to provide fire-proof housing facilities

PONDICHERRY, JULY 8. The Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham,
announced that a master plan was being finalised in consultation
with the HUDCO and some expertise from foreign countries to
provide fire-proof housing facilities to the poor.
Addressing a meeting of officials in Karaikal after visiting
fire-ravaged pockets there on Saturday, Mr. Shanmugham said the
official machinery should lose no time in providing relief and
rehabilitation to the scores of families rendered homeless in the
series of fire mishaps in Karaikal and some of the neighbouring
areas, recently.
A communication from the Department of Information said here on
Saturday that Mr. Shanmugham visited the site at Puliankottai
Salai in Karaikal, where a site belonging to the administration
was being used to provide alternative sites to the people
rendered homeless in the recent fire near the Karaikal Ammayar
temple there.
He visited the industrial growth centre coming up at an extent of
650 acres in Polagam near Karaikal. Mr. Shanmugham said that
experts from countries like France and Malaysia would be
participating in a three-day seminar being organised by the
administration to enlist their views and technical ideas to
construct a fire-proof houses. These countries expressed their
willingness to contribute funds as the Centre had already
permitted the administration to work out the arrangements.
The French Government also come forward to establish hospitals in
Pondicherry, the communication said.
He also referred to the strict austerity measures observed by his
Government to conserve finance and to invest in welfare
activities.
Generation of jobs in Karaikal would pick up fast with the
special steps taken to develop a growth centre and also to
promote infrastructural activities in the region, he said and
instructed the officials to ensure that no segment of people was
left high and dry in getting the amenities.
Mr. Shanmugham handed Rs. 50,000 to each of the six families who
had lost their nearest kin in the last month fire accident in
Karaikal.
The Karaikal wing of the ONGC handed over Rs. 2 lakhs to the
Relief Fund, the communication added.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. M.
Chandrakasu, the Tourism Minister, Mr. A.V. Subramanian, the
District Collector, Mr. A. Anbarasu, the Regional Executive
Officer, Mr. B.R. Babu, the Deputy Collector (Revenue), Mr.
Sathyanarayana, among others.
