Protect the police

Sir, - The views expressed by Mr. L.N. Venkatesan in this column (July 7) are commendable. It is high time the police be permitted to have an association to safeguard themselves from the wrath of politicians and people like Mr. Krishna Iyer. If the police cadre is demoralised in the light of the Centre's one-sided directive to punish those who have erred, no policeman will be prepared to take action against daily crimes.

The Tamil Nadu Government should immediately apprise the Home Ministry and arrange for the withdrawal of unwarranted directives in this regard. Maintaining law and order is a State subject and the Centre should not interfere just because Union Ministers were involved. It is most unfortunate that the Centre in order to appease one of its allies is violating democratic principles.

A.K. Ramanan,
