DVAC probe into charges of corruption in Corpn.

By K. T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI, JULY 9. A preliminary investigation is on by the DVAC into the allegations of corruption and irregularities in the Chennai Corporation during DMK rule.

The probe followed a memorandum to the State Government and the Governor by major opposition parties in the civic body. The matter was referred by the Government to the investigating agency, official sources told The Hindu.

First on the list of allegations is the one relating to corruption in construction of nine mini-flyovers resulting in a loss of Rs.12 crores to the Corporation. The sources said the special unit took up a preliminary probe into the alleged scam. Even as this was on, the CB-CID registered a case and arrested the former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi and his son, Mr. M. K. Stalin, among others.

The other `irregularities' were allegedly committed in restoration of roads after cuts for the purpose of leak detection and renewal of old water mains under Chennai-II project, causing a loss of Rs.150 crores and in construction of buildings in which the civic body suffered a loss of Rs.10 crores. It was also alleged that the Corporation incurred a loss of Rs.40 lakhs in construction of Napier Bridge. The other charges were related to corruption in purchase of anti-stripping agent and in the construction of mofussil bus-stand at Broadway and land-grabbing by a former Minister and his family members.
