School boy killed, six kids injured

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 9. A seven-year-old schoolgoing boy, Mohd. Azam, was killed and six other children were injured when the compound wall of a building collapsed near Dhobi Ghat in the Old Mallepally area here on Monday morning. The injured children were admitted to Osmania General Hospital. The condition of two children was stated to be critical.

The children, all residents of the same locality, were walking along the rain-soaked compound wall when it collapsed all of a sudden. Locality people immediately swung into action and began pulling out the children buried under the debris. Subsequently, the demolition squad of the Municipal Corporation rushed there and pulled down the remaining portion of the compound wall as it was believed to be unstable.

The injured children were Mohd. Younus (11), Mohd. Adil (8), Mohd. Aqil (6), Mohd. Gouse (10), Mohd. Faijal (12) and Mohd. Ali (12). All of them are now undergoing treatment in hospital.

The compound wall as well as the house, near Dhobi Ghat, were in dilapidated condition and had been vacant for the past three months as the owner, Mr. Jahangir Chavosh, got the tenants vacated recently. Local people say that the owner wanted to demolish the house and construct a new one.

Speaking to presspersons at the wall collapse site, the local residents alleged that they had informed the owner about the unstable condition of the house. The owner had earlier let out the premises and about 15 families were residing in the building.

The Habeebnagar Inspector, Mr. Ashfaq Khan, said no case was registered against the house owner as none of the relatives of victims preferred to lodge a complaint. However, investigations were going on, he added.
