New facilities in British Library

HYDERABAD, JULY 9. A host of new facilities have been launched at the British Library here on Monday. While the Information Technology Learning Resource Centre (ITLRC) and the All India Library Catalogue on the Web were launched by Mr. J. Satyanarayana, Secretary, Information Technology, the Cyber Centre and a book exhibition on "Knowledge and society", were inaugurated by Prof. C. Subba Rao, Chairman of the AP Council for Higher Education.

The ITLRC, an all India initiative has over 2,000 latest books and periodicals on computers, information and communication technology and IT applications in various fields. In addition there will be CDs, tutorials, learning packages and information about IT education.

The all India library catalogue on web (www.bclindia.org) is complete knowledge bank, having information on over 300,000 books, videos and CDs in the network of British Council libraries in India. Members can review the holdings of all these libraries and borrow a book from any of them. The Cyber Centre has six state of the art computers with high speed Internet connectivity with down load and printing facilities. Yet another facility, the result of council's global MoU with the World Bank, is the World Bank Information Centre stocking bank's publications.

Prof. Subba Rao, expressed the hope that the value of books would not come down with increasing importance accorded to IT and going digital. Mr. Kartar Singh, Deputy Director, British Council, Chennai, said the 12 libraries in India, constitute the British Council's largest library network in the world. There are more than 100,000 individual and institutional members. In tune with the demand for library services in a knowledge- based economy, the libraries' collection in areas like IT is being strengthened. Mr. K. Sudhakar Goud, Manager, British Library, Hyderabad welcomed the gathering.
