By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, JULY 9. A host of new facilities have been launched at
the British Library here on Monday. While the Information
Technology Learning Resource Centre (ITLRC) and the All India
Library Catalogue on the Web were launched by Mr. J.
Satyanarayana, Secretary, Information Technology, the Cyber
Centre and a book exhibition on "Knowledge and society", were
inaugurated by Prof. C. Subba Rao, Chairman of the AP Council for
Higher Education.
The ITLRC, an all India initiative has over 2,000 latest books
and periodicals on computers, information and communication
technology and IT applications in various fields. In addition
there will be CDs, tutorials, learning packages and information
about IT education.
The all India library catalogue on web (www.bclindia.org) is
complete knowledge bank, having information on over 300,000
books, videos and CDs in the network of British Council libraries
in India. Members can review the holdings of all these libraries
and borrow a book from any of them. The Cyber Centre has six
state of the art computers with high speed Internet connectivity
with down load and printing facilities. Yet another facility, the
result of council's global MoU with the World Bank, is the World
Bank Information Centre stocking bank's publications.
Prof. Subba Rao, expressed the hope that the value of books would
not come down with increasing importance accorded to IT and going
digital. Mr. Kartar Singh, Deputy Director, British Council,
Chennai, said the 12 libraries in India, constitute the British
Council's largest library network in the world. There are more
than 100,000 individual and institutional members. In tune with
the demand for library services in a knowledge- based economy,
the libraries' collection in areas like IT is being strengthened.
